AMAZING GRACE (John Newton)
Amazing Grace
John Newton (1725-1807)
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

Anglé:
This song was written by John Newton (1725-1807). It is one of the most famous protestant and Christian songs. The special thing about it, is that John Newton, in addition to being a Christian, was also the captain of a Slave ship. He indulged in selling human beings. Black people then called Negroes. One day in 1748 – which is 100 years before France abolished its trade of selling Black people or abolished its own Slavery itself in Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana and Réunion – John Newton was caught in a storm at large and believed his life was coming to an end. He then began to pray and implore God to save his life and that of his crew. As he finally survived, he then got down to writing this song as a way to thank God. A sort of thanksgiving. This ordeal was such a milestone in his life that he became utterly transformed and could not go on selling his fellow human beings. Be they Black or White. "Amazing Grace" meaning "Endless, striking Grace" even got him standing up for the rights of his Black Christian brothers. He then set to fight against Slavery. He had become an Abolitionist.
"Amazing Grace" sé on chanté antanlontan menm. Chanté a dizuityèm syèk. I ka rakonté'w, ankijan on krétyen, ki pé vou, oben mwenmenm, ka di Bondyé granmèsi, pou sa i fè ba'y. Moun-la – krétyen-la – ka hélé jwa a'y, kontan a'y. I ka, bat osonnkès, i ka, bat toupatou, sa Bondyé fè ba'y, ki sé kontèl adan: Prèmyé kadans (kouplé) : - Bondyé woté'y adan on vyé léta, a moun anchyen-anchyen, on léta, anchèpi menm (saved a wretch like me) - Bondyé vin sové'y, vin woté pyé a'y an vyé soulyé, alòskè I té pèd menm (…was lost but now I'm found) - Bondyé géri'y, davwa krétyen-lasa, té avèg, Bondyé désiyé zyé a'y (was blind but now I see) Twazyèm kadans: - Bondyé sové'y, adan onpakèt danjé pou'y. Bondyé, arèsté dévenn a krétyen-la, ki té ka trimé, toulongalé (toils) - Bondyé, woté'y, an zatrap é trap, krétyen-la té pri adan (snares) - Bondyé pwotéjé'y, asi chimen, (brought me safe thus far); krétyen-la, ka di osi, ankijan i ni konfyans adan Bondyé: i ka di Lagras - Gras a Bondyé - ké bay on palkonduit (Lagras ké rédé'y vansé, ké montré'y bon chimen)à Grace will lead me on. - Krétyen-la, savé byen, Bondyé sé potèksyon. I ka di'w konsa, Bondyé sé on boukliyé; (on « parékou ») a « shield » (kadans 4) Rèstan chanté-la, adan menm fil-lasa. Menm lidé-lasa. Sé sa yo ka kriyé, on témwanyaj. On palé-a-témwen. Men osi, sé on bèl di-mèsi. I ka di Mési-la mèsi. |
